        Stairways Pressure Differential Systems

        Important for saving lives and helping firefighting efforts

        Safe escape routes for people and safe entry routes for firefighters is the key points of a building's safety concept.

        The basis of the fire safety concepts in Europe is the standard 120101 part 6. This standard is separated into application classes, A to F.

        Class A to E describes self-rescue with (partly) simultaneous firefighting.  Here, the focus is on self-rescue and the maximum differential pressure must be below 50 Pa.

        Class F addresses firefighting. Here, the permissible differential pressures must be above 50 Pa.

        Mechanical systems cannot usually switch between different operating pressures. (max 50Pa/min50Pa).

        For this reason, electronically controlled overpressure systems bring a new dimension to fire protection. With a simple switch, the fire brigades can increase the system to maximum performance, which usually eliminates the need for mobile fans. This means that electronic overpressure systems not only support rescue routes, but also provide additional protection to firefighters against flue gases at high temperatures/pressures.         • Faster self-rescue: Fire escape stairways are recommended even if other arrangements are permitted for escape and rescue routes. Evacuating people is faster through smoke-free stairways or stairways with less smoke. The panic risk is reduced as well.
        • Faster rescue by others: For electronic overpressure systems, the air supply of the fans can be switched to the maximum air volume by a fire fighter's switch. This pushes the smoke away, even at high fire temperatures. Thanks to this, a time-consuming installation of mobile fans will in many cases be unnecessary.

        • Reduction of construction costs: Openings for air outlets are not required. Control dampers and additional weather protection equipment are usually not necessary.

        • Architectural freedom: Huge air terminal devices or high roof fans are not required.
